CSASC is a joint meeting of the Czech, Slovenian, Austrian, Slovak and Catalan mathematical societies which started in Prague in 2010 out of former bilateral meetings of the Czech and Catalan societies, and was held in Krems (Austria) in 2011 and Koper (Slovenia) in 2013. This fourth edition in Barcelona displays the continuing lively relationship among the mathematicians from the five societies within the network of multilateral meetings in the EMS.

Abstract
Active control systems are in principle very effective for vibration mitigation of structures subjected to wind and earthquake. Despite of the existence of documented full-scale applications of active control, notably in Japan, several issues need to be addressed in order to gain a wider acceptance of smart technologies by owners and designers. The main issues can be roughly summarized as: proper design and modeling of the actuators, optimal sensors placement and use of efficient calculators and data transmission protocols to reduce time delay; proper modeling of control-structure-interaction effects; definition of appropriate control algorithms able to deal with model uncertainties and physical constraints.
The aim of this talk is to expose ongoing research that the presenter is leading on active control solutions for structural vibration mitigation. Several specific aspects of the general topic are treated, like optimal actuators' and sensors' distribution for 3D response mitigation, proper reproduction of experimental actuators' dynamics, management of physical limits of devices, exploitation of robust adaptive control strategies for multi-hazard vibration mitigation.
Dr. Ilaria Venanzi is currently Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of University of Perugia. She received the Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 2006 and was post-doc from 2006 to 2009 at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Perugia. She has been visiting researcher at the Columbia University in New York (Sept. 2004 - Feb. 2005). Dr. Venanzi has developed international scientific collaborations with the NIST (National Institute for Standard and Technology) at Washington D.C., the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, the Northeastern University in Boston. Dr. Venanzi has taught for several courses of structural design and is currently holder of the master course of "Inspection, testing and retrofit of structures" at University of Perugia. She conducts research in wind engineering, structural control, structural optimization, performance-based design and computational mechanics and has published extensively in the area of structural engineering and mechanics.

We would like to inform you about the forthcoming CRM Intensive Research Program on Large Cardinals and Strong Logics, to be held from September 5 to December 16, 2016.
The National Science Foundation and the Association for Symbolic Logic offer grants to participate in the program and its scientific events. You can check the program’s web page for further information at http://www.crm.cat/en/Activities/Curs_2016-2017/Pages/IRP-Large-Cardinals-and-Strong-Logics.aspx
Many natural mathematical concepts cannot be expressed in first-order logic but need stronger logics. Among such concepts are the freeness of a group, separability of a space, completeness of an order, etc. By a strong logic we mean model-theoretically defined extensions of first-order logic, such as first-order logic with generalized quantifiers, infinitary logics, second-order logic, as well as higher-order logics. The study of strong logics runs immediately into questions that depend essentially on set-theoretical assumptions beyond the standard ZFC axioms, such as infinitary combinatorial principles and the existence of large cardinals. It is therefore crucial to be able to pinpoint the position of a given strong logic in the set-theoretical definability hierarchy, thus helping us understand better the set-theoretical nature of the logic, and therefore of the mathematical notions it can express.
Objectives
This program will bring to the CRM a diverse group of international high-level researchers working in strong logics, large cardinals, the foundations of set theory, and the applications of set-theoretical methods in other areas of mathematics, such as algebra, set-theoretical topology, category theory, algebraic topology, homotopy theory, C*-algebras, measure theory, etc. In all these areas there are not only direct set-theoretical applications but also new results and methods, which are amenable to the expressive power of strong logics.
During the Research Program the following activities will be held:
Advanced Course on Large Cardinals and Strong Logics, from September 19 to 23, 2016. Deadline for registration: August 1st, 2016. More information on registration and grants available at http://www.crm.cat/en/Activities/Curs_2016-2017/Pages/AC_Large-Cardinals.aspx
