Description

Many natural mathematical concepts cannot be expressed in first-order logic but need stronger logics. Among such concepts are the freeness of a group, separability of a space, completeness of an order, etc. By a strong logic we mean model-theoretically defined extensions of first-order logic, such as first-order logic with generalized quantifiers, infinitary logics, second-order logic, as well as higher-order logics. The study of strong logics runs immediately into questions that depend essentially on set-theoretical assumptions beyond the standard ZFC axioms, such as infinitary combinatorial principles and the existence of large cardinals. It is therefore crucial to be able to pinpoint the position of a given strong logic in the set-theoretical definability hierarchy, thus helping us understand better the set-theoretical nature of the logic, and therefore of the mathematical notions it can express.

Objectives

This program will bring to the CRM a diverse group of international high-level researchers working in strong logics, large cardinals, the foundations of set theory, and the applications of set-theoretical methods in other areas of mathematics, such as algebra, set-theoretical topology, category theory, algebraic topology, homotopy theory, C*-algebras, measure theory, etc. In all these areas there are not only direct set-theoretical applications but also new results and methods, which are amenable to the expressive power of strong logics.
During the Research Program the following activities will be held:
Advanced Course on Large Cardinals and Strong Logics, from September 19 to 23, 2016. Deadline for registration: August 1st, 2016. More information on registration and grants available at Link
Workshop 1: Set-theoretical aspects of the model theory of strong logics, from September 26 to 30, 2016. Deadline for registration: August 1st, 2016. More information on registration and grants available at Link
Young researcher’s Seminar week, from November 7 to 11, 2016. You can participate by presenting your work before October 31, 2016. More information on how to participate at Link
Workshop 2: Applications of strong logics in other areas of mathematics, from November 14 to 18, 2016. Deadline for registration: November 6, 2016. More information on registration and grants available at Link

Abstract

We first introduce the basic concepts of the brand new conic finance theory. Conic finance delivers a consistent two-price theory fundamentally modelling the acceptability of risks. Conic‎ pricing (or bid and ask pricing) of credit risk shows how counterparty credit risk when conservatively valued at the bid price results in larger CVA than would occur under risk neutral pricing. On the other hand when it comes to the debt valuation adjustment, since it is a liability, it must be priced at the ask. This mitigates and can even eliminate the DVA.‎ ‎

Title: Dynamic and Verifiable Hierarchical Secret Sharing

Abstract

In this work we provide a framework for dynamic secret sharing and present the first dynamic and verifiable hierarchical secret sharing scheme based on Birkhoff interpolation. Since the scheme is dynamic it allows, without reconstructing the message distributed, to add and remove shareholders, to renew shares, and to modify the conditions for accessing the message. Furthermore, each shareholder can verify its share received during these algorithms protecting itself against malicious dealers and shareholders. While these algorithms were already available for classical Lagrange interpolation based secret sharing, corresponding techniques for Birkhoff interpolation based schemes were missing. Note that Birkhoff interpolation is currently the only technique available that allows to construct hierarchical secret sharing schemes that are efficient and allow to provide shares of equal size for all shareholder in the hierarchy. Thus, our scheme is an important contribution to hierarchical secret sharing and to other techniques using this primitive, such as social secret sharing based cloud storage.

Title: Covering points with rotating polygons
Speaker: Carlos Seara (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya)

Abstract

We study the problem of rotating a simple polygon to contain the maximum number of elements from a given point set. We consider variations of this problem where the rotation center is a given point or lies on a line segment, a line, or a polygonal chain. This is a joint work with Carlos Alegría, David Orden, Leonidas Palios, and Jorge Urrutia.

Abstract

We present a unified framework to deal with threshold functions for the existence of solutions to systems of linear equations in random sets. This covers the study of several fundamental combinatorial families such as k-arithmetic progressions, k-sum-free sets, B_h(g)- sequences and Hilbert cubes of dimension k.

We show that there exists a threshold function for the property "A^m contains a non-trivial solution of Mx=0" where A is a random set. This threshold function depends on a parameter maximized over all subsystems, a notion previously introduced by Rödl and Rucinski. The talk will contain a formal definition of trivial solutions for any combinatorial structure, extending a previous definition by Ruzsa.

Joint work with Juanjo Rué Perna and Ana Zumalacárregui.
