Josep J. Masdemont will give a keynote at the International Astronautical Congress

Sep 04, 2025

He has been chosen to give a lecture at the prestigious International Astronautical Congress, organized by the International Astronautical Federation.

Professor Masdemont was selected as one of the nominees to deliver the Breakwell Lecture. This is a keynote presentation at the astrodynamics symposium of the International Astronautical Congress, 76th IAC-2025, which will be held in Sydney from 29/09 to 03/10. The IAC is one of the most important global events on astronautics.

The talk is entitled Libration point orbits: a brief journey through fundamental dynamics and applications. It will cover the fundamental dynamical concepts associated with libration points and LPOs, including the Lyapunov, halo and various types of quasiperiodic orbits. Techniques for presenting practical representations and the general structure of these families of orbits, as well as their transition into larger multibody dynamical systems, will be presented. Special emphasis will be placed on the geometric interpretation of phase space structures, such as invariant manifolds. The associated computational challenges will be addressed, highlighting how these manifolds are essential for designing efficient station-keeping strategies, even with solar sail propulsion. Furthermore, we will examine how their intersections enable transfer mechanisms between libration point orbits, creating low-energy pathways that exploit chaotic heteroclinic connections.
